The problem

Carbon build up can choke an engine long before a part has failed.

Direct injection engines do not wash the back of the intake valves with fuel. Oil vapour, EGR soot, and crankcase deposits bake onto the valves and intake ports, slowly reducing airflow and upsetting combustion.

Walnut blasting removes the hard carbon deposits from the intake tract using crushed walnut shell media. It is abrasive enough to clean carbon, but soft enough to be used correctly around engine components.

Common symptoms

  • Rough idle or cold-start shaking
  • Flat spots, hesitation, or poor throttle response
  • Misfire fault codes such as P0300 to P0308
  • Loss of power at low and mid range rpm
  • Poor fuel economy and increased smoke
  • EGR, airflow, MAP, or MAF related faults

Before and after

A mechanical clean for a mechanical restriction.

Chemical treatments can help light deposits in some situations, but heavy intake valve carbon usually needs direct physical removal.

The service

What happens during walnut blasting?

01

Diagnosis first

We check symptoms, fault codes, airflow clues, and engine suitability before recommending walnut blasting.

02

Intake access

The intake manifold is removed as required so the valve ports can be reached and isolated correctly.

03

Walnut media clean

Crushed walnut shell media is blasted into the port and extracted with the loosened carbon deposits.

04

Rebuild and check

The intake is refitted, the vehicle is checked, and any related issues are reported clearly.

Coverage

Walnut blasting support across Wales and nearby regions.

We help customers from Wales, the West Midlands, the South West, and the Home Counties with carbon build up diagnosis and walnut blasting bookings.

For customers further away, we can arrange vehicle collection and drop off so the job can be handled without a long day of travel.

Fault codes

Codes that can point toward carbon build up.

Fault codes do not prove carbon build up on their own, but these codes often appear when restricted intake airflow, misfires, EGR faults, or boost control issues are present.
